About this place

Discover St Francis Church

Established in 1931, this church was founded to serve the expanding community in Headington, a suburb of Oxford. The site was generously donated by Lord Nuffield in 1929, and the foundation stone was laid by him. The church was designed by architect Lawrence Dale, with the original plan including a church hall convertible to a church on weekends, and a screened sanctuary for weekday services and meditation. Over time, the full plan was not implemented, but the existing structure remains a testament to the vision of its founders. (oxfordpreservation.org.uk)

A distinctive feature of the church is its painted beams, which depict scenes from the life of St. Francis. One beam is elaborately decorated to represent the "Hymn of Creation," painted by Mr. L. Davenport, an instructor at the Oxford School of Arts and Crafts. Additionally, a unique hanging cross, designed by A. Hawkesley, symbolizes the fragmentation of the world drawn together in the Cross of Christ. (oxfordpreservation.org.uk)

The church offers a variety of services and events to engage the community. Sunday worship is held at 10:30 am, featuring an informal and modern service with a liturgical twist. The first Sunday of each month is dedicated to All Age Worship, the second and fourth Sundays to Holy Communion, and the third and fifth Sundays to Morning Worship. Weekday activities include morning prayer from 9 am to 9:30 am, Monday to Thursday, and various community events such as Musical Memories, a singing group for people with dementia and their carers, and a community drop-in on Tuesdays offering a place to belong and make friends. The church is also involved in supporting local initiatives, such as hosting a food bank on Thursdays and maintaining a community garden. These efforts reflect the church's commitment to serving and enriching the local community. (stfrancischurch.org)

Visitors and newcomers are welcomed with open arms, and the church strives to provide a warm, encouraging, and inclusive environment for all. Whether you're seeking spiritual nourishment, community engagement, or a place to connect, this church offers a variety of opportunities to get involved and grow.
