St Peter's Church, Shelley

St Peter's Church in Shelley, Ongar, Essex, is a Victorian-era Anglican church that has served as a place of worship and community gathering since its completion in 1888. The church was designed by the architectural firm Habershon and Fawkner, who were known for their work in the Early English style. The building is constructed of red brick, with the exterior clad in dressed flint, and features stone dressings to windows, doors, and quoins. The roof is red-tiled with a pierced ridge, adding to its distinctive appearance. (historicengland.org.uk)

The church was built as the third known structure on the site, following two previous churches dedicated to Saint Peter. The original church was founded around 1328 and consisted of a nave and chancel of stone with a wooden turret. This building fell into disrepair and was declared unsafe around 1800, leading to its demolition in 1810. A second church was erected using the same foundations but was of such poor quality that by 1886 it was showing signs of deterioration. Consequently, a third church was constructed in 1888, funded by subscriptions, including a significant contribution of £3,000 from the Reverend W.M. Oliver of Bobbingworth. (omhs.org.uk)

St Peter's Church operates as a Chapel of Ease under the Bishop's permission and is a sister church to St Martin's in Chipping Ongar. It is normally open daily during daylight hours to visitors, tourists, and pilgrims, providing a quiet space for private prayer and reflection. The church also offers "help-yourself" tea and coffee, water, and doggie treats for canine visitors, reflecting its welcoming nature. (achurchnearyou.com)

The church holds monthly Julian Meetings on the second Thursday at 2 pm, focusing on silent meditation in the presence of God, and is open to all. Additionally, it provides a series of festival services, including Candlemas, an Annunciation Day communion, an Ascension Day communion, the Patronal Festival on June 29th, Harvest Festival, Remembrance Day, and Nine Lessons and Carols on the fourth Sunday of Advent.
