Blind Bishop's Steps
The Blind Bishop's Steps are a distinctive feature in Farnham, Surrey, England, leading from Castle Street up to Farnham Castle. Constructed in the early 16th century, these steps were designed by Bishop Richard Foxe, who served as the Bishop of Winchester from 1501 until his death in 1528. Foxe, who became blind in his later years, commissioned the steps to facilitate his safe ascent to the castle. The design comprises seven flights of seven steps, each followed by a flat section of seven paces, allowing him to count his way up and down. (farnhamsociety.org.uk)
Farnham Castle, the destination at the top of the steps, has a rich history dating back to 1138 when it was built by Henri de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and grandson of William the Conqueror. The castle served as the residence for the Bishops of Winchester for over 800 years. During the Tudor period, Bishop Foxe made significant alterations to the castle, including the construction of the Blind Bishop's Steps. (farnhamcastle.com)
The steps are part of Farnham's Heritage Trail, a circular walking route that highlights the town's historic treasures. This trail offers visitors the opportunity to explore Farnham's rich history, including landmarks like the Blind Bishop's Steps, which were built for the blind bishop in 1524. (farnham.gov.uk)
In 2025, the Farnham Town Brewery launched a beer named "Blind Bishop’s Steps," paying homage to this historic landmark. The brewery, established by Greg Strutton, introduced this ale at the Farnham Beerex festival, marking a significant moment in the town's brewing history. (farnhamherald.com)
The Blind Bishop's Steps not only serve as a functional historical artifact but also as a testament to the ingenuity and personal history of Bishop Richard Foxe. They remain a notable feature in Farnham, reflecting the town's rich heritage and the personal stories intertwined with its landmarks.
