The Zawiya of Wazzani is one of the most prominent religious and social institutions in Morocco, founded in the 18th century by Moulay Abdallah Sharif al-Wazzani. This zawiya is distinguished by its focus on disseminating religious education and Islamic sciences, in addition to its prominent role in promoting social and economic values in Moroccan society. Under the leadership of Moulay Tayeb ibn Muhammad al-Wazzani, the zawiya witnessed a significant expansion in its activities, establishing new branches in Algeria and eastern Morocco. He also contributed to the development of the city of Wazzan by building mosques, schools, markets, and hotels, transforming it into a thriving urban center. Moulay Tayeb died in 1767, and his son, Moulay Ahmad ibn Tayeb al-Wazzani, succeeded him. He continued to strengthen the zawiya's religious and cultural influence and faced economic challenges, which he overcame with wisdom and shrewdness. During the reign of Sidi Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wazzani, the zawiya reached its zenith, forging close ties with Sultan Moulay Sulayman and enriching its library with numerous valuable books. Sidi Ali died in 1811 CE, and his son, Sidi al-Hajj al-Arabi ibn Ali al-Wazzani, succeeded him as sheikh. Sidi al-Hajj Abd al-Salam ibn al-Arabi al-Wazzani played a prominent role in calming tribal conflicts and promoting stability in the region. In the 19th century, Sidi al-Hajj Abd al-Salam ibn al-Arabi al-Wazzani assumed the sheikhdom. He undertook the Hajj pilgrimage, visited Algiers and Tuat, and opened the zawiya (Sufi lodge) to modern civilization. He died in 1892 CE, and his son, Sidi al-Arabi ibn al-Hajj Abd al-Salam, succeeded him, continuing his father's work in strengthening the zawiya's role in society. The Wazzani zawiya is an important center for religious and social education, offering educational and religious programs to the local community and contributing to the promotion of Islamic values and social solidarity. It also plays a pivotal role in agricultural development through the organization of "tawiza" (collective voluntary work) for the benefit of needy families, reflecting its commitment to social responsibility and mutual support within the community. The Zawiya of Wazzan is a model of a religious institution that combines religious education and social solidarity, and it continues to play its prominent role in Moroccan society to this day.
