Chillingham Community Association

The Chillingham Community Association (CCA), established in May 2001, stands as a testament to the collective spirit and dedication of the Chillingham community in Northern New South Wales, Australia. Formed through the voluntary efforts of local residents, the association's primary aim is to promote the well-being of the community, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Historical Background

The roots of the CCA trace back to a series of community workshops held in the late 1990s, funded by the Department of State and Regional Development. These workshops, conducted in the Chillingham Town Hall, served as a catalyst for community engagement and development. In May 2001, following two of these workshops, the Chillingham Community Association was formally established. The association acquired a 2.5-hectare site at 1469 Numinbah Road, Chillingham, which included a heritage dairy building in need of renovation. This site was purchased for $80,000 by the Commonwealth Government's Regional Solutions Program, marking a significant milestone in the community's journey toward self-sufficiency and empowerment. The Chillingham Community Centre

Central to the association's activities is the Chillingham Community Centre, a heritage dairy building estimated to date back to around 1906. Originally known as 'cow bales,' this structure was owned by a local pioneering family and has been transformed into a vibrant hub for community engagement. The building's restoration has been a labor of love, with the community working collaboratively to preserve its historical significance while adapting it to meet contemporary needs. The first stage of development in 2002 focused on retrofitting the building and developing community gardens and education programs. Subsequent stages have introduced sustainability initiatives, including the installation of solar panels and rainwater storage systems, reflecting the community's commitment to ecological responsibility. Community Activities and Events

A cornerstone of the CCA's offerings is the monthly Chillingham Markets, held on the second Sunday of each month. These markets have become a cherished tradition, featuring a diverse array of stalls that showcase local produce, arts and crafts, and live music. The markets provide a platform for local artisans and farmers to connect with the community, fostering a sense of pride and support for local businesses. The markets also serve as a social gathering point, where residents and visitors can mingle, share stories, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. (findglocal.com)

The Chillingham Voices Choir, an enthusiastic community group, is also based at the centre. Known for their diverse musical performances, the choir contributes to the cultural richness of the community. Their repertoire spans various genres, including jazz, pop, gospel, classical, and opera, reflecting the eclectic tastes of the choir members. The choir's performances are a highlight of local events, drawing audiences from within and beyond the community. Their commitment to excellence and community engagement has made them a beloved fixture in Chillingham's cultural landscape. (chillingham.org.au)

Sustainability Initiatives

In response to environmental challenges, the CCA has undertaken several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and ecological responsibility. One notable project is the "Sustainable water use at Chillingham Community Centre," which includes the installation of rainwater tanks and a Biolytic sewage treatment system. These measures have significantly reduced the centre's reliance on external water sources and minimized its environmental footprint. The project also involved riparian regeneration, with 500 meters of riparian vegetation along an unnamed tributary of the Rous River being planted with local native species. This initiative has enhanced biodiversity and improved water quality in the area. The community's proactive approach to sustainability serves as a model for other rural communities seeking to balance development with environmental stewardship.
